Neo Geo CD

after finally realising that their cart based home AES system wasn't going to make them any money (due to the ridiculously high costs of the software) SNK decided to release a CD based version of their arcade/home hardware which would bring the production costs of the software right down. sadly, this was too little too late and the machine just couldn't compete with the Playstation and Saturn and so didn't do all that well. there aren't huge numbers of shooters available for the machine and admittedly the MVS versions are better (the CD systems load times can be pretty horiffic at times), however if you can't afford/don't have the space for/banned from buying a Jamma cab then I heartily recommend picking one of these up. they're relatively cheap and fairly widely available and there are some real gems available for it.
LAST RESORT/. provided you don't mind playing a game with a ship that looks like a bell end you'll really enjoy this. great backdrops and lovely sprites and animation. the weapon options are a bit limited but that doesn't really detract from the gameplay. this is a nice, tough shooter that'll keep you going for a while. plus you can pick it up relatively easily and cheaply.

VIEW POINT/. the remake of this Sammy original is already covered in the PS1 section. thankfully this version is a fantastic little shooter. converted from the arcade original, age really hasn't taken anything from this game. the isometric 3-D style sprites and backdrops still look as fantastic today as they did back in 1992. a really original shooter that has a very distinctive graphical style. bags of gameplay and nice and hard to boot. i can't recommend this one enough. great stuff!
